mr scribble

I've been getting into making zines and cartoons recently. One of my characters is Mr Scribble. This is a Mr Scribble cartoon I did last week. I will put some more up here when I've finished them.

the shark finning letter

Do you remember when I wrote a letter about shark finning to the government? Well I got this letter back and it's been on our fridge, sorry we forgot to update the blog with it.
The letter is quite interesting, you can click on it to make it bigger so you can read it.

I'm still a bit worried about the sharks.

gizmo and gary

About a week ago we got some new pets- two guinea pigs. My one is called Gizmo Joe and Arlo's is called Gary Zac. They are really cute and funny. In the last picture you can see my friend Sophie holding Gary and me holding Gizmo. In the middle is my Dad with Gizmo (I think) and the first photo is me and Gizmo.
Arlo and I look after them, we clean their hutch out every Sunday, we change their water and food every day, and bring them snacks like carrots and corn cobs. They really love eating corn, but it has to be raw. Dad built a pen for them and they really like it because they can nibble on the grass. They always seem to be hungry.

a cat who goes to the city

Today I did this cartoon of  a cat who goes to the city. My Mum scanned it in, I hope you can read it.
Today's the second to last day of the holidays, I'm starting to get bored. But i've been doing lots of drawing to pass the time.

Yesterday at school we did poetry. We looked at menus from restaurants around Wellington and used the language from them to write poems. We made a list of all the things that would make a teacher angry, for example, throwing a ball through a window, or calling out in class.

Then we mixed these up with the words from the menus to make a funny Angry Teacher Menu.

Some of my lines were 'gourmet leaky drink bottles' and 'crispy whispering'.

We are also going to make wind chimes in class to sell at the school market night. I'm looking forward to that.

looking after sharks

Sharks are ancient fish that live in the ocean. Lots of people are scared of seeing them in the sea. They eat other fish, but they don't ever hunt humans. Sharks have a very sand-papery texture. Shark bones are made from cartilage, which is that bendy stuff in our ears. Their teeth are extremely sharp and last for a lifetime. When they fall out, new ones quickly grow in their place.

Every year humans kill 100 million sharks, just for their fins. 273.973 sharks are killed every day. Shark -finning is cruel and wasteful, but is legal in New Zealand. You can catch a shark, cut off its fins, and dump it in the water and not get in trouble at all!

The shark is supposed to be dead, but sometimes it is still alive when it is thrown back in. Other countries have banned shark finning, but not New Zealand. Shark fins are worth a lot of money- that's one reason people actually do shark finning.

I wrote to David Carter MP to ask him to do something about shark finning. Please could you write too. If you like you can copy my letter below. I also drew lots of colourful fish and seaweed around the words which was quite fun.

Dear Mr Carter,

Why do you think it is legal in NZ to cut off the fins from sharks?
I know you are busy, but this is crazy!
It is cruel to let this happen in our waters.
Shark finning is already illegal in 98 countries.
Could we do something about it?

It is not fair, and it’s endangering the food chain in our oceans.
I love New Zealand, and I feel really strongly about shark finning.

Please do something about this.

Thank you for reading this letter.
